Archangels and Angels of Faith, Hope, Mercy and Religion

Angel

The combination of Faith, Hope, Mercy, and Religion appears in classical cemetery architecture and monument design, where they are personified as allegorical figures or “guardians.” The guardians are frequently accompanied by an Archangel.

Hope: Almost universally anchored by a large ship’s anchor or holding a fresh olive branch.
Mercy: Often shown with arms crossed gently over the chest, or reaching downward to extend comfort.
Religion: Frequently depicted holding scripture, a stone tablet, or an open book of law.

They are frequently accompanied by an Archangel:

Michael: Courage, defense, and the fight against evil. Typically, depicted with a sword.
Gabriel: Divine news, wisdom, and revelation. Typically depicted with a trumpet.
Raphael: Physical and spiritual healing, and safe travel. Symbolized by a staff or fish.
Uriel: Light, truth, and inner wisdom. Symbolized by an open scroll, book, or flame.
Lucifer: Light, Desire, Free-Will and Justice/Light Bringer or Light Bearer (Fallen.) His name translates directly to “Light Bringer”. His pre-fall symbolism includes pristine white light, torches, and radiant cosmic fire, representing divine illumination, wisdom, and clarity.
